PJ Preneur's Bedtime Story

Oops-You’ve caught me telling a fairy tale. If you’ve been following the PJPreneur, you know that I rarely sleep, much less ever consider retirement, because I love my job and I have a great boss-me! And if you’ve been following me, you know the Jewish Princess part is absolutely myth-what JAP’s car of choice is a VW Camper van? So, truth be known, I’m retiring the title only. As you know, I love pajamas, love the work I do, and do my best thinking before the sun comes up. So most mornings I hop out of bed excited to start my day, wash my face, brush my teeth and settle down with a cup of coffee in front of my computer to download the ideas spinning around in my head. (I call it “brain-letting” but that’s another “story”. ) When you’re doing what you love, you lose track of time, so before I know it, it’s late morning and my dog, Lucy, is standing at the door with her legs crossed and leash at the ready, pleading for a walk. Well, at this point I can hardly make her wait while I shower and dress. So, we head out the door “as-is”. Now, walking is my creative time. Returning home, anxious to jot down my thoughts before I forget them, I once again go straight to the computer, postponing getting dressed just a bit longer. Once again time flies as I am engrossed in doing the work I love, and it is mid afternoon, time for our afternoon coastwalk. But even in California, I don’t go to the beach in my PJs, so I quickly pull on some sweats and head to the boardwalk, and the pattern repeats- idea generation, rush home to “download”, time flies and it’s dinnertime. After a quick shower, it seems silly to get dressed if I’m not going anywhere so I pull on some clean PJs, have dinner and it’s time for our evening walk. Now, I know many work-at-home entrepreneurs feel they can’t take their business seriously in bunny slippers and I do dress in “real clothes” when I am traveling or meeting with a client in person but I believe work should be fun and comfortable. And I learned early on to quickly shift into my “professional mindset suit” when my husband interrupted my down time and handed me the portable phone in a bubble bath. After glaring at him, I closed my eyes, imagined myself at my desk in a suit, took a deep breath and greeted the caller professionally. After discussion of Nielsen Ratings and demographics and a commitment to several thousand dollars of television spots, I threw the phone at my husband, pointed my water-crinkled index finger at him and let him know that I was “out of the office.” Then sliding back under water to resume my quiet time uninterrupted, it occurred to me that once I got wrapped up in the conversation, I had mentally slipped out of my birthday suit and into my business suit and the account rep on the other end was none the wiser. Fast-forward thirty years and I am still successfully self employed and after decades on the California coast where my neighbors didn’t even notice, happy in my routine of working and walking my dog in my PJs.. But I am spending this winter in my Florida beach house. In sharp contrast to my home just south of Big Sur where tie dye is still the fashion, where aging executives pull off the highway, drop their clothes on the shoulder and pull on wetsuits to catch a few waves on the way to or from the office, my neighbors here in conservative northern Florida pass me in matching tennis outfits or designer beachwear and roll their eyes skyward. I know they’re thinking, “oh, that must be the one from California.” So, my routine has changed a bit. I still work at home on my laptop, still comfy on the sofa or under an umbrella at the beach, but have traded in the PJs for shorts and t-shirt. And I still feel so fortunate to be work whenever, however and wherever I please. So, though I am retiring the PJpreneur title, I’ll continue to bring you great ideas, tools and resources for turning your interests into income, passion into profit and craft into cash.
