One of the quickest, simplest ways to make passive income is to leverage the information already downloaded to your personal hard drive, your brain. You may not value your wisdom right now but we all have some knowledge from hobbies, interests and passions that other people will happily pay us to teach them.
Make Money While You Sleep
If you have read my silly fairy tale, “The PJpreneur’s Bedtime Story”, you’ll see that there are many ways to turn your knowledge into passive income.
OK, I know, princesses, queens and other royalty don’t normally have to concern themselves with how to make a living, but it’s tough to write a fairy tale about working online from home.. And, I admit, my storytelling skills could use some work. But, that just goes to show that you don’t need to be a great writer to make a lot of money leveraging your knowledge. As evidenced in my “Bedtime Story”, writing is not my strength, and yet, I make a great living through leveraging my knowledge. In fact, you don’t even have to be an expert on anything. It helps if you have a passion, interest or hobby but expertise is not a prerequisite.
When people purchase information online, they are looking for content. They aren’t particularly interested in literary excellence. They aren’t seeking great literature. They want the knowledge you have to share.
I’ll let you in on another secret. You can charge a lot more for an e-book than for a printed book. I don’t really understand why people pay MORE for something that they have to use their own ink and paper to print, but they do. Maybe it’s a matter of instant gratification. They want it right now. What I do know is, people who publish online make a lot more money than those who write printed books. And spend way less time on the writing, editing and marketing. Selling written material is only one of many ways I’ll share with you to make a living online, but it is one of the easiest places to begin.
Before you start to count the millions you are going to make, though, you need to be aware of a couple of things. Lots of people write great e-books and never make any money. Others write very mediocre material and rake in the cash. Why?
Because writing is only part of it. The most important element is marketing it. No one will buy your information if they don’t know it’s out there. And that is an area I DO know well. As you know by now, my writing is nothing to “write home about”,sorry for the cliche, but I sure can show you how to get your products to sell.
Something else you need to know is that there are NO “get rich quick” magic tricks and that passive income doesn’t mean you start out just sitting on the beach while money rolls in. (That does happen but YOU must do the work now so that you can enjoy passive income in a bit. And while you are doing that work now, you can be sitting on a beach, in a campground, or home on the sofa in your PJs.) I will tell you, though, that most of my “work from anywhere” buddies and I do enjoy waking up to an inbox full of of orders and coming home from vacation or a day at the beach to more money in our bank accounts. In fact, some of the strategies I am going to show you will enable you to be off on a remote island with no internet connection and it will appear that your’e at your desk working hard. And you don’t have to be a techno-geek. In fact, I probably know less than you do about computers.
You may be thinking that you don’t have any knowledge that anyone would actually pay you for, but you’d be surprised how much you know that you take for granted and assume others would know as well. Some things seem so simple to you but you’d be amazed how many people have no idea how to do something that you find second nature.
How do I know this? Because I honestly didn’t realize I knew anything people would actually pay me for. Yes, , Id started and sold some profitable businesses, had advertising, merchandising and marketing skills but I just couldn’t see how short of starting yet another hands on business, that knowledge would bring me income.
Then I had two “Aha” moments. Yes, it actually took me two crises to “get it” that I had any “information” of value. The first occurred when I had been a massage therapist for some years. I fell and broke my hand and was in a cast for six weeks. That meant no income for at least eight. I began to panic and then I noticed something funny was happening. Other health professionals were asking me, “How did you manage to build such a successful practice so quickly?” It is no secret that many body workers (as well as artists, writers,coaches and other creative and “helping” professionals) struggle financially. They may be great at their craft, but they are broke because they don’t know how to market themselves. Yet we had moved long distance twice during the years I was in the bodywork business and each time, I managed to build a full practice very quickly. Other therapists were asking me, “Will you teach me how to attract more clients and build my practice?” You see, marketing my skill was something that just came naturally to me, and I was so amazed to learn that I knew any “secret formula” that people would actually pay me to share with them. This was pre-internet, so I developed a “Full Pratice Formula” on paper and coached over the phone and in person. It felt so good to know that if I ever again was unable to use my hands to work, I would still have earning power.
The second “I have value” lesson came years later. I had started, owned and operated a successful retail business for several years when I found I was frequently having to leave my business and fly cross country for family emergencies. My parents were getting older and unwell and I wanted to be there when they needed me. If I closed the business, I had no income.
I thought back to years ago when my partner and I operated a very large and successful chain of retail stores and both managed to take several long vacations a year, leaving business in the hands of commissioned employees. I looked at why we were able to be snorkeling in Hawaii, hiking in Alaska or tasting wine and chocolate in Europe and still have income streaming in. What I realized was that the key was having duplicatable systems in place that employees could do in our absence. (Because this was pre-internet, we had no virtual assistants so even with a full staff, it meant having to deal with faxes and overnight express from a distance.) Don’t you just love how all that has changed now and we can set up systems to automate and have e-mails go out and blog postings happen while we’re on vacation?.
That was leveraging lesson #1. The key to leveraging was in developing systems. I didn’t need to be present every day to make money.
Then I developed a major health concern which made it difficult to stand or walk trade shows to buy merchandise, so the key to continued income. was once again leveraging my knowledge. My lightbulb moment when I realized I do have something of worth came when corporate “refugees “ and aspiring entrepreneurs started asking me if they could hire me to teach them how to start a business like mine.
What I learned from both those experiences was:
I never wanted to again be in a situation that required my being physically present on a regular basis in order to have income, and that
everyone has a unique gift between their ears that can be turned into passive income.
